Dr. Dorothy Narvaez-Woods is the Special As- sistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, United States Department of Defense. Dr. Narvaez-Woods has been on the front lines as a provider ensuring to support medical readiness and health care for Service members, our veterans, and family members. Prior to her current role, Dr. Narvaez-Woods served as Civilian Staff General Dentist for the Department of Medical and Dental Readiness at Walter Reed National Military Medical Cen- ter in Bethesda, Maryland. From 2005 to 2012, Dr. Narvaez-Woods practiced dentistry in the private sector. Dr. Narvaez-Woods served as a dental officer in the United States Navy from 2001 to 2005, as a United States Navy Reserve Lieutenant and General Dental Officer at the Branch Den- tal Clinics of Marine Corps Station, Miramar, San Diego, California and Naval Amphibious Base, Naval Special Warfare Center, Coro- nado, California. During that time she also filled roles as the Dental Department Head, Forensic Medical Officer, Medical Training Team Leader, and Medical Triage Officer on the USS Rushmore LSD-47. In 2003, Dr. Nar- vaez-Woods deployed to the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf in support of both Opera- tion Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. She holds Dental Operational Forces Management and Combat Casualty Care Qualifications from defense medical training facilities in California and Texas, respectively. Dr. Narvaez-Woods received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 2001, later obtaining her General Practice Resident Certif- icate from the Naval Medical Center San Diego in 2002. She served as Pre-Doctoral Fellow for the Intramural Research at National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1997, and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the Universi- ty of Maryland, College Park, in 1996. In addition to her experience in the federal government, commercial sector, and the United States military, Dr. Narvaez-Woods is also an active leader in the non-profit world, having supported the Navy SEAL Museum, Naval Special Warfare Family Foundation, and Folds of Honor Foundation with a variety of speaking and fundraising engagements. On September 12, 2012, her husband Ty Woods, retired SEAL was killed in action in Benghazi, Libya. Dr. Dorothy Narvaez-Woods, DDS Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, United States SOCS Edward Byers was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1979. He grew up in Grand Rapids, Ohio. In 1997, he graduated from Otsego High School where he played varsity soccer. Byers joined the Navy in September 1998, and subsequent- ly attended Boot Camp and Corpsman “A” School in Great Lakes, Illinois. Byers spent four years as a Hospital Corps- man. In 1998, he was assigned to Great Lakes Naval Hospital. In 1999, he served with 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he deployed with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard USS Austin (LPD 4). During deployment he earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) and Fleet Marine Force (FMF) warfare devices. In 2002, Byers attended Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL (BUD/S) training and grad- uated with Class 242. After graduation, he at- tended the Special Operations Combat Medic (SOCM) course. Byers was then assigned to an East Coast SEAL Team. Byers has 11 overseas deployments with nine combat tours. His personal decorations in- clude the Bronze Star with Valor (five awards), the Purple Heart (two awards), the Joint Service Commendation Medal with Valor, the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards, one with Valor), the Combat Action ribbon (two awards), and the Good Conduct Medal (five awards). Byers was awarded the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama during a White House ceremony February 29, 2016 for his efforts during a hostage rescue while deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012. He is only the 11th living service member to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery displayed in Afghanistan.
