Lt(jg) Frey was wounded about the face by shrapnel while swimming a line from the
LCVP to the LCR to replace one that had parted while the LCR was being towed away from the beach. Despite his wounds, he calmly continued to counsel his men and direct them to safer locations until he was struck again and mortally wounded.
